For the ancient Maya, chia seeds were both a staple food and a remedy. Europe has now also taken notice of this “superfood” from Mexico, because these tiny seeds pack a punch. With their high content of antioxidants, calcium, potassium, iron, and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, they outshine many other well-established foods.

Due to their high content of natural nutrients (rich in essential amino acids, unsaturated fatty acids, minerals, and vitamins) and mucilage, chia seeds are suitable not only for the daily nutritional needs of recreational and sport horses but also—in particular—for older and sick horses.
For horses with digestive issues, those shedding their coats, or to boost immunity and revitalize horses, you’ll see visibly rapid results with CHIA seeds.

Chia (Salvia hispanica) is a small, oval seed of light brown color that originates from Mexico; its unique composition and health-promoting properties were discovered centuries ago by the Aztecs and Native Americans. For centuries, these nutritious chia seeds were a staple food of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, who believed them to possess magical powers. Today, scientific studies have proven just how high-quality the seeds of this sage species are. Chia seeds contain many beneficial nutrients.

Chia seeds contain a particularly high-quality spectrum of amino acids. Particularly remarkable is the oil contained in chia seeds, which consists of more than 60% valuable omega-3 linolenic acid—one of the highest concentrations in the plant kingdom. Furthermore, chia oil is rich in natural antioxidants, including chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid. Like psyllium and flaxseed, chia is a mucilage-forming seed. These seeds are generally rich in mucopolysaccharides, which, upon contact with water, form a colorless mucilage on the surface of the seeds, thereby improving the quality and consistency of stool in cases of digestive disorders. This mucus also promotes the regeneration of the intestinal mucosa, thereby reducing the risk of diarrhea.

Benefits:

• Chia is the richest plant-based source of omega-3 fatty acids, with an optimal 3:

1 ratio to omega-6 fatty acids• Omega-3 fatty acids promote neurochemical communication in brain cells and play a positive role in maintaining neural cell fluidity•

Competitive horses also benefit from this effect and, thanks to the high content of high-quality proteins containing essential amino acids, experience stronger and faster muscle growth.

• Clinical studies have shown that essential fatty acids

can help regulate blood pressure and offer protection against cardiovascular disease• Chia seeds are gluten- and cholesterol-free and easily digestible

. Signs of joint wear and tear are always associated with inflammatory processes that can lead to joint swelling and pain. Thus, it is likely that the anti-inflammatory properties of omega-3 fatty acids can have a positive effect on the inflammatory process in the joint. Scientists have found that the omega-3 fatty acids ALA, EPA, and DHA, in particular, also influence the disease process in the joint at the molecular level.
