Marshmallow belongs to the mallow family and, like its relatives, is a decorative addition to any garden. The most important property of marshmallow is its high mucilage content, particularly in the root. For this reason, marshmallow should not be boiled but prepared only as a cold extract to preserve the mucilage’s properties.
Marshmallow mucilage has a soothing effect on all mucous membranes, which is why it is primarily used to support the respiratory and digestive systems. Consequently, marshmallow can be used wherever a coating, protective effect is desired.
