The large D-ring snaffle is characterized by a fixed ring. Compared to a water snaffle, the sides should fit about one centimeter closer to the corners of the mouth. The D-ring prevents the corners of the mouth from getting pinched in the rings and provides stronger lateral guidance compared to an olive-head bit. The horse cannot push the bit upward with its tongue, so the mouthpiece rests more calmly in the mouth and is stabilized slightly more laterally. Since the ring does not rotate, there is minimal pressure on the neck; however, the large D-ring also slightly mitigates this pressure. The double-jointed mouthpiece distributes pressure evenly across the tongue and the floor of the mouth. The D-ring provides lateral stabilization and guidance, creating calmness and stability in the horse’s mouth.
