The term “water snaffle” dates back to the Middle Ages. In the past, it was common to ride horses with curb bits featuring very long shanks. To water the horses, the grooms would insert special, simple bits. The name “water snaffle” was born. Today, the water snaffle is the most widely used type of bit. This category includes all bits with free-moving rings. A snaffle bit works by applying tension. When the reins are taken up, the rein aid is transmitted to the tongue and the lower jawbone. Snaffle bits come in a wide variety of shapes and materials. The best-known types are the single-jointed and double-jointed designs.
