Low-starch, low-sugar specialty food (not grain-based muesli)
Unlike our Pro PSSM formula, standard grain-based mueslis contain high levels of carbohydrates (starch), which are converted into glucose (sugar) during “metabolism.” In horses that are sensitive to feed or that receive too much concentrated feed for the work demanded of them, this leads to acidification of the body’s cells. As a result, the following symptoms may occur:
• Glucose intolerance and insulin resistance•
Laminitis, cross-laminitis, Cushing’s syndrome, PSSM, and
EMS
Horses that suffer from, for example, the carbohydrate storage disease “PSSM” (polysaccharide storage myopathy), have a chronic metabolic problem also known as sugar storage disease. This condition can be hereditary in certain horse breeds. The horses appear reluctant to move, stiff, and lacking energy. A muscle biopsy is necessary and will accurately determine the severity of the condition.
In the Marstall “PRO PSSM” formula, we have reduced the freely available carbohydrates (starch/sugar) to an absolute minimum. Most of the ingredients in this concentrated feed provide plant oils and fats as a source of energy. In this way, we deprive this insidious disease of its “nutritional basis” and actively combat its causes.
