Quantitative elements, trace elements and vitamins are vital for all horses at every stage of performance. The individual active substances have different tasks and target organs. Calcium and phosphorus, the two most important minerals in terms of quantity, influence the stability and function of the bone structure. 99% of calcium and about 80% of phosphorus are deposited in the skeleton. In addition, these elements are also necessary for blood clotting, conduction and energy metabolism in the muscles. When minerals are administered, various interactions can take place that decisively influence the biological value of the individual elements. Minerals from inorganic salts must first be present in the form of ions or bound to organic carriers so that they can be absorbed. The ions released in the stomach can form insoluble complexes that are impassable for the intestinal wall. Phosphorus requirements, for example, are increased by excessive protein feeding due to increased renal P excretion. On the other hand, high iron contents in the ration (contamination of the feed) impair the utilisation of phosphorus, manganese and zinc.
