Magnesium is extremely important as a component of numerous enzymes in the horse's nerve and muscle tissue. In the animal organism, about 60% of the magnesium is localised in the bone tissue. In blood serum, the magnesium content is 2-3 mg per 100 ml. The magnesium supply is extremely important for the heart function. During lactation, growth and for the development of muscle and nerve tissue, and to a lesser extent during sweating, the magnesium requirement is increased. The supply of magnesium is sufficient with normal feeding supplemented with cereals. On the other hand, in intensively fertilised meadows, the absorption rate of magnesium can be disturbed by an excess of potassium. Stress also causes a reduction in the absorption rate of magnesium in the intestinal tract.

A lack of magnesium leads to a drop in blood levels, which results in tetanic symptoms (pasture tetany), increased excitability, muscle tremors and muscle cramps after only a short time. Magnesium and vitamin E play an important role for the muscles and nervous system. Horses with muscular problems such as tying up/PSSM/SER, those that perform a lot (sport, breeding) or those that only get a little fresh grass have an increased need for vitamin E. Fresh grass is the best source of vitamin E. In hay, the content drops by 70% just one week after cutting. Cereals generally contain very little vitamin E. We only use natural vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol) in all our products. The much cheaper synthetic vitamin E (dl-alpha-tocopherol) is based on petroleum (crude oil) and is not particularly well absorbed by horses. Natural vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol), on the other hand, comes from plants and is 2-3 times more readily available to the horse than synthetic vitamin E. If available, natural vitamin E is normally labelled as such. If it simply says vitamin E preparation or dl-alpha-tocopherol, it is certainly of artificial origin. Magnesium is often called the "salt of inner peace". If there is a deficiency, this is often shown by fidgety behaviour. Magnesium quickly calms the central nervous system.
